Parallel Ridges, Busy Storm Track

Tree Service in Cleveland follows the lay of the land. Cleveland, the seat of Bradley County, sits among parallel ridges that run roughly north-northeast: Candies Creek Ridge (also called Clingan Ridge), Mouse Creek or Lead Mine Ridge, and Blue Springs Ridge. Elevations range from just under 700 feet to nearly 1,200 feet within city limits. Homes on the ridge slopes, in the creek valleys and on the flatter ground between them each come with their own tree problems.

Tornado history

Cleveland has seen more than its share of tornadoes. Since 1908, 28 tornadoes have been documented in the Cleveland area, and seven struck on April 27, 2011 alone. That day, the long-track EF4 that began in Catoosa County, Georgia, crossed the southern and eastern fringes of the city at low-end EF4 strength and killed four people there. Then, on April 12, 2020, an EF2 tornado from the same storm system that hit Chattanooga damaged or destroyed homes and mobile homes in eastern Cleveland.

After repeated storms

In a city hit this often, many yards have trees with old storm damage. Common issues we see:

  • Tops that broke and regrew as clusters of weak upright shoots
  • Cracks and seams in the trunk from twisting winds
  • Deadwood high in the crown left from damaged limbs
  • Trees left exposed when their neighbors were blown down or removed

An inspection and some targeted pruning can make a big difference before the next storm season.

Mouse Creek and the greenway

South Mouse Creek runs between Mouse Creek and Lead Mine Ridge, and the Cleveland/Bradley County Greenway follows it for about 4.4 miles from downtown into the northern neighborhoods. Creekside trees cope with wet soil, erosion and flood debris. If a tree near the creek has started to lean or shows exposed roots, it should be checked.

Utilities and lines

Cleveland Utilities, a city-owned agency, provides electric, water and sewer service to Cleveland and surrounding areas. If a tree is touching an electric line, call Cleveland Utilities and keep clear. We will take care of the rest of the tree once the line side is safe.

Housing in Cleveland

Cleveland Questions

Who do I call if a tree is on a power line in Cleveland?

Call Cleveland Utilities, which provides electric service in the city and surrounding areas. Stay well away from the line. Once it is safe, we can remove the tree and clean up.

My tree has a cluster of branches growing where the top broke years ago. Is that a problem?

Often, yes. Shoots that grow from a broken top are usually weakly attached and can break in storms as they get heavier. We can thin them or reduce them to make the tree safer, or recommend removal if decay has set in.

Do you work outside Cleveland city limits?

Yes. We work in Cleveland and the surrounding parts of Bradley County, as well as across the Chattanooga area.

Can you take down a tree on a steep ridge lot?

Yes. On Cleveland's ridge slopes, we usually climb and remove the tree in sections, lowering pieces with ropes so they do not roll toward the house or the road.

Do you grind stumps left from old storms?

Yes. Many Cleveland yards still have stumps from 2011 or 2020 cleanup. We grind them below grade so you can mow, plant or build over the area.
