A Town in a Ridge Gap

Tree Service in Ringgold starts with the ridge. Taylor Ridge runs through town, with a gap just east of the city center; to the south it is called Taylors Ridge and to the north White Oak Mountain. South Chickamauga Creek, a tributary of the Tennessee River, also runs through the city. Ringgold is the seat of Catoosa County and had 3,414 residents at the 2020 Census.

April 27, 2011

Ringgold carries the memory of one of the worst tornadoes in the region's history. That evening, an EF4 tornado with peak winds near 190 mph touched down along Davis Ridge Road in Catoosa County and crossed Ringgold, rated EF3 through town and EF4 along Cherokee Valley Road. In Ringgold, 74 homes or businesses were destroyed and 60 more had major damage. The storm went on through Apison and Cleveland, Tennessee on a 48-mile path and killed 20 people in all. It was only the eighth EF4 or F4 tornado in Georgia since 1950.

Trees after the rebuild

Much of Ringgold rebuilt after 2011. Many lots lost their large trees, and the trees around homes today are a mix of storm survivors and younger plantings now 10 to 15 years old. Both need attention:

  • Survivors may carry twisted trunks, cracked unions or broken tops that regrew as weak upright shoots.
  • Younger trees are at the age when structural pruning does the most good: choosing a single leader, spacing main limbs and removing crossing branches.

A little care now means stronger trees in the next big storm.

Ridge slopes and creek bottoms

Homes on the slopes of Taylor Ridge and White Oak Mountain deal with runoff, thin soils and trees that tower above the house. Along South Chickamauga Creek, trees face wet soils and periodic flooding, and they tend to lean toward the water. We look at slope, drainage and lean before recommending work on either.

Historic Ringgold

Ringgold has a long history: founded in 1846 and incorporated in 1847, the site of the Battle of Ringgold Gap in 1863 and home to the Whitman-Anderson House, which Sherman spared when he ordered the town burned. Older homes near downtown often have large shade trees that need careful work around old structures.

Our services in Ringgold

Tree removal, including sectional takedowns near houses; pruning for structure, clearance and storm resistance; stump grinding; storm cleanup; and inspections for trees with old storm damage.

Creek-side cautions

Working near South Chickamauga Creek takes extra care. Soft banks may not support heavy equipment, and trees cut near the water should not be dropped into the creek. We usually take creek-side trees down in pieces and keep machines on firm ground back from the bank.

Ringgold Questions

My trees were planted after 2011. Do they need pruning?

Trees in the 10 to 15 year range benefit most from structural pruning, such as choosing a main leader and removing crossing or poorly attached limbs. It is quick work now and prevents breakage later.

A tree on the ridge above my house is leaning. Should I worry?

A tree leaning toward the house on a slope should be checked, especially if the lean is new or the soil at the base is cracked or heaved. We can assess it and recommend whether it can stay.

Do you work in Fort Oglethorpe and Tunnel Hill too?

Yes. We work throughout Catoosa County, including Ringgold, Fort Oglethorpe and Tunnel Hill.

How do I know if a storm-survivor tree is still safe?

Look for long cracks, a twisted trunk, dead wood high in the crown, or clusters of shoots where a top broke. Any of these is a reason for an inspection. We will tell you plainly whether the tree can stay.
