Established Yards North of the River

Tree Service in Hixson is mostly about mature suburban yards. Hixson was once an unincorporated community and is now part of the City of Chattanooga, with about 14,216 residents. Its eastern edge runs along the Tennessee River and Chickamauga Dam, Red Bank and U.S. 27 border it to the west, and Middle Valley and Thrasher Pike mark the north. Neighborhoods such as DuPont, Northgate, Big Ridge and Valleybrook are full of homes from the decades when Hixson grew as a suburb, and the trees planted then are now big.

When a suburb's trees grow up

In neighborhoods built forty or more years ago, a pattern shows up again and again. Trees planted as saplings near the house are now taller than the roof. Pines planted for quick screening have reached the end of their lives. Root systems have run under driveways and patios. And trees that were never pruned when young carry heavy, poorly attached limbs. Most of our Hixson work is fixing those problems before they cause damage.

What usually needs doing

  • Reducing and thinning large limbs that hang over roofs
  • Removing pines that are dead, dying or too tall for their spot
  • Pruning trees back from service lines and the street
  • Grinding old stumps left from earlier removals
  • Cleanup and hazard cutting after spring and summer thunderstorms
  • Evaluating trees whose roots are lifting driveways or walks

City rules apply here

Because Hixson is part of Chattanooga, the city tree ordinance applies: a tree on city property or in the right-of-way needs a Tree Ordinance Permit before it is removed or disturbed, while trees on your own lot are yours to decide on. City brush pickup also covers Hixson. Request it through 311, and keep pieces to 8 feet long and 18 inches thick, in piles no more than 4 feet high.

River and creek corridors

Greenway Farms, part of the North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy, sits in Hixson, and many neighborhoods back onto creek bottoms and wooded drainage. Trees along those corridors deal with wet soils and erosion. If a tree near a creek has exposed roots or has started to lean, it is worth checking before it falls across a fence or into the water.

Power and service lines

As part of Chattanooga, Hixson is served by EPB for most electric service. If a tree is touching a line, contact the utility first and stay clear. We will handle the rest of the tree once the line side is safe.

Timing the work

Most pruning on Hixson's oaks, maples and other hardwoods can be done any time of year, but late fall through winter is often the easiest time to see a tree's structure and work without damaging lawns and beds. Dead, broken or hanging limbs over the house should be dealt with whenever they are found, not saved for a season.

Hixson Questions

The pines behind my house are huge. Should they come down?

Not automatically. Healthy pines with good form can stay. Dead tops, thin crowns, beetle pitch tubes or a lean toward the house are reasons to consider removal. We will look at each tree and give you our honest view.

Roots from my oak are cracking the driveway. Can you cut them?

Cutting large roots close to the trunk can make a tree unstable or start decline. Sometimes a small root can be removed safely. We will look at where the roots are and explain the risks before anything is cut.

Do you work in Middle Valley and Lakesite too?

Yes. We work throughout Hixson and the neighboring communities of Middle Valley, Lakesite, Red Bank and Soddy-Daisy.

How long does a typical removal take?

A single medium-sized tree with good access is often done in a few hours, including cleanup. Large trees near houses, tight backyards or multiple trees can take a full day or more. The written estimate will give you a realistic idea.
