A Town Named for a Tunnel
Tree Service in Tunnel Hill is work in a small town with plenty of rural land around it. Tunnel Hill, in Whitfield County, Georgia, had 963 residents at the 2020 Census and covers about 2 square miles. It lies along the western base of Chetoogeta Mountain, which USGS maps label Tunnel Hill Ridge, and takes its name from the 1,497-foot railroad tunnel cut through that mountain and dedicated on October 31, 1849.
On the Tennessee Valley Divide
The crest of Chetoogeta Mountain carries the Tennessee Valley Divide, separating water that flows to the Tennessee River from water that flows to the Conasauga River. For tree owners, the practical point is that the town sits where slopes come down off the ridge. Homes near the base of the mountain get runoff and wind off the ridge, and trees on those slopes can be taller and closer to the house than on flat ground.
What rural lots need
Outside the small town center, many properties have pasture, woods and long drives. Common requests include:
- Clearing trees for new homes, barns, shops or gardens
- Removing dead or leaning trees near the house or drive
- Cutting trees and limbs back from fences and outbuildings
- Raising limbs along drives so trucks and equipment can pass
- Stump grinding after clearing so ground can be mowed
- Storm cleanup after wind brings trees down
Civil War history
During the Civil War, Tunnel Hill homes served as part of a major hospital system, and the Clisby Austin House was Union General William T. Sherman's headquarters while he planned attacks on Dalton and Resaca. An annual reenactment is held each September. Older properties in and around town may have trees as old as the houses, which deserve careful work.
Planning removals near slopes
When a tree stands above a house on a slope, felling it in one piece is rarely safe. We usually climb and take it down in sections, lowering each piece with ropes. On open ground with plenty of room, felling may be the faster and cheaper option, and we will tell you which makes sense for each tree.
Wood and cleanup
On rural lots, many owners want to keep logs for firewood or chips for mulch. We can cut wood to length, stack it where you like and chip brush on site, or haul everything away. The written estimate spells out exactly what cleanup is included.
Weather off the ridge
Storms that come over Chetoogeta Mountain can bring gusty winds down the slopes onto homes at the base. Trees with dead tops, cracks or weak unions are the most likely to fail. Having them checked and pruned before spring storm season is cheaper than cleaning up after.

Tunnel Hill Questions
Can you clear land for a new house in Tunnel Hill?
Yes. We remove trees in the building footprint and driveway route, grind stumps where needed, and either leave or haul the wood. Share your builder's plans so the clearing matches.
Is it cheaper to fell a tree than to take it down in sections?
Usually, yes, when there is open ground to drop it safely. Near houses or on slopes, sectional removal is safer. We will explain which approach fits each tree.
Do you also work in Dalton and Ringgold?
Yes. We work in Tunnel Hill, Dalton, Ringgold and across Whitfield and Catoosa counties.
Do you take down trees along long driveways?
Yes. We remove dead and hazard trees along drives and raise limbs so trucks, delivery vehicles and emergency vehicles can pass.
What happens to the stump after a removal?
We can grind it below grade, leaving grindings you can use as mulch or have hauled away. If you plan to build or fence over the spot, tell us so we grind deep enough.
