Living in the Woods, 1,700 Feet Up

Tree Service on Signal Mountain is different from tree work in the valley, because most homes here were built into an existing forest. The town sits atop the south end of Walden Ridge at about 1,703 feet, and its southern edge looks down roughly 1,000 feet to the Tennessee River. Many lots are mostly trees, with a house, a drive and a small lawn carved out of them. Keeping those trees healthy and safe around the house is most of the job.

A long-settled mountain

Signal Mountain was chartered in 1919, after families had been moving up the mountain after the epidemics of 1873 and 1878, and a streetcar line reached it from Chattanooga in 1913. Some of the oldest homes stand among trees that were already large when they were built. The town has 8,852 residents (2020 Census), and the Census reports that 87.9% of homes are owner-occupied and 91.8% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier. People stay here a long time, and they tend to plan tree work years ahead rather than react to it.

Wind and exposure on the ridge

Trees on a ridge top and along a bluff catch wind that valley trees never feel. A tall oak or pine that grew up sheltered in the woods can be left exposed when neighboring trees are cleared for a house or a view, and it may not have the trunk taper or root spread to handle that. If you are planning to open a view, it is worth thinking about which trees will be left standing alone afterward.

Work we do on the mountain

  • View pruning: selective thinning and crown raising to open sightlines without topping or stripping trees.
  • House clearance: taking limbs back from roofs, chimneys and decks, where leaf litter and falling branches cause the most trouble.
  • Hazard removal: dead, hollow or root-damaged trees near the house, drive or road, often taken down in sections.
  • Hemlock checks: looking for hemlock woolly adelgid on eastern hemlocks, especially along stream ravines.
  • Stump grinding and cleanup: including chipping brush on site so it does not have to be hauled down the mountain.

Hemlocks deserve attention

The hemlock woolly adelgid is now found from northern Georgia to Maine, and research cited by the U.S. Forest Service found that infested hemlocks in the South decline faster than the roughly nine-year pattern seen in the Northeast. Look for small white cottony tufts on the underside of twigs and needles that turn grayish green. Treated early, many hemlocks can be kept alive; left alone, they can go from healthy to dead within a few seasons.

Near the bluff

Trees along the brow often anchor thin soil over rock. Removing them can open a slope to erosion, and dropping pieces near an edge takes careful planning. We will tell you plainly if a tree near the bluff is better left, pruned or taken out.

Signal Mountain Questions

Can you open up my view without killing the trees?

Usually. Selective thinning and raising the lower crown can open a view while leaving the trees healthy. We avoid topping, which leaves weak regrowth and decay, and we will point out any tree that would be left dangerously exposed.

How do I know if my hemlocks have adelgid?

Turn over a branch tip and look for tiny white cottony tufts where the needles attach, usually most visible from late fall to spring. Grayish needles and little new growth are other signs. We can check them when we visit.

Do you haul brush down the mountain?

We can chip brush on site and either leave the chips for your beds and trails or take them away, whichever you prefer. Logs can be cut to firewood length or removed.

Do you also work in Walden and Fairmount?

Yes. We work across the ridge, including Walden, Fairmount and the roads toward the Cumberland Trail.
