Lake Country on the County's North Side
Tree Service in Harrison is tied to the water. When TVA finished Chickamauga Dam in 1940, the lake it created flooded much of the old town of Harrison, which had been the Hamilton County seat from 1840 until the courthouse moved to Chattanooga in 1870. Harrison Bay is named for that submerged town, and in places old foundations and roads can still be seen. Today the Harrison area is a lake community of 7,902 people (2020 Census), with nearly 1.9 square miles of its 8.6 square miles under water.
How the lake affects trees on your lot
Chickamauga Lake runs about 59 miles from Watts Bar Dam to Chickamauga Dam, with roughly 810 miles of shoreline. Its level is not constant: TVA lowers it to about 676 feet by the end of November and raises it to full pool near 682 feet by late spring. Shoreline trees live with that cycle. Banks soften and erode, roots get exposed, and trees lean out over the water toward the light. Those leaners can be beautiful, but they are also the trees most likely to go over in a wind off the lake.
Rules near the water
TVA manages the shoreline of its reservoirs. If a tree is on or near the water's edge, or on land below the TVA boundary, check what TVA permits before removing it or clearing vegetation. Upland trees on your own lot are a separate matter, and we can plan that work while you sort out the shoreline side.
Typical Harrison jobs
- Pruning lake-view corridors through trees without topping them
- Removing dead or leaning trees that threaten docks, boathouses or the house
- Raising limbs over driveways and long gravel lanes
- Taking down storm-damaged trees on wooded lots and cutting them for firewood or chipping
- Stump grinding after removals on lawns that slope to the water
Homes that are lived in for years
Census figures show about 70% of Harrison homes are owner-occupied, with a median home value of $307,400, and 84% of residents were in the same home a year earlier. Many owners have spent a long time with their trees and know which ones they want to keep. Our job is to keep those healthy and to remove the ones that have become a risk.
Nearby parks
Harrison Bay State Park, about 1,200 acres, covers part of the shoreline here and gives a good picture of what native lake-edge woods look like. Homes near the park and along the coves often share that same mix of hardwoods and pines.

Harrison Questions
Can you take down a tree that leans out over the lake?
Often, but check with TVA first if the tree is on the shoreline or below the TVA line. When the work is allowed, we usually remove a leaner in sections so pieces do not land in the water or on the dock.
Can you open up a view of the lake?
Yes. We thin and raise trees to create sightlines while keeping them healthy. We avoid topping, which leads to weak regrowth and decay.
Do you work around Harrison Bay State Park and the coves?
Yes. We work across the Harrison area, including homes near the park and along the coves and peninsulas of Chickamauga Lake.
Will removing a shoreline tree cause erosion?
It can. Roots hold soft lake banks together, and removing a tree may expose the bank to wave action. Reducing the crown or removing the trunk while leaving the stump and roots in place is sometimes the better option. Check with TVA for shoreline rules.
