The Valley Below Cloudland Canyon

Tree Service in Trenton covers a small town with big woods on every side. Trenton is the only incorporated municipality in Dade County, Georgia, and has been the county seat since 1839. It sits along Interstate 59 about 20 miles from Chattanooga, at an elevation of roughly 758 feet, and had 2,195 residents at the 2020 Census. Lookout Mountain rises to the east, and Cloudland Canyon State Park lies on the mountain's western edge nearby.

The 2011 tornado

Trenton was hit hard on April 27, 2011. A tornado from the Cordova and Pisgah, Alabama supercell crossed into Georgia and struck Trenton at EF3 strength, killing two people, destroying or heavily damaging dozens of homes and wrecking a grocery store, two apartment complexes and a funeral home. Trees in and around Trenton today include survivors of that storm and trees planted since.

The forest next door

Cloudland Canyon, about 3,485 acres, cuts more than 1,000 feet deep into the western side of Lookout Mountain. Its woods include large oaks, hickories, hemlocks and maples, with rhododendron and mountain laurel, sour gum and dogwood, and pines marking the shale layers below the sandstone cap. Many of those same species grow on wooded lots around Trenton. Knowing them helps us spot problems: for example, hemlocks along ravines may need checks for hemlock woolly adelgid, while oaks and hickories often need deadwood removal.

Tree work we do in Trenton

  • Hazard removal: Dead, cracked or leaning trees near homes and drives.
  • Storm-damage follow-up: Inspecting and pruning trees with old breaks, twisted trunks or regrowth from broken tops.
  • Clearance pruning: Lifting and shortening limbs over roofs, driveways and outbuildings.
  • Clearing: Removing trees for new buildings, gardens or fence lines on rural lots.
  • Stump grinding: Removing stumps so ground can be mowed or replanted.
  • Cleanup: Chipping brush and cutting wood to firewood length if you want it.

Mountain slopes and valley floors

Homes on the slopes of Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain contend with runoff and steep ground, while homes on the valley floor see wetter soils. On slopes, we often lower pieces with ropes so they do not roll; in wet ground, we watch for root problems and soft soil under equipment.

A town that rebuilt

After 2011, many Trenton families rebuilt and replanted. Trees planted then are reaching the age where structural pruning does the most good. A bit of shaping now helps them handle the next big storm.

Pines on shale slopes

At Cloudland Canyon, pines mark the shale layers below the sandstone cap, and the same pattern shows up on slopes around Trenton. Pines on thin, dry shale soil are vulnerable to drought stress and pine beetles. A pine that turns brown over a few weeks is usually dead and should come down before it gets brittle.

Trenton Questions

Do you travel to Trenton and Dade County?

Yes. Trenton and the rest of Dade County are part of our service area. Call or send the form and we will set up a visit.

My hemlocks look grayish. Should I be worried?

Grayish needles and little new growth can be signs of hemlock woolly adelgid. Look for white cottony tufts on the undersides of twigs. We can check them and talk about treatment options.

Can you remove a tree on a steep slope?

Yes. On slopes, we usually climb and lower the tree in sections with ropes so nothing rolls into the house or road below.

Can you remove storm-damaged trees from my woods?

Yes. We cut and clear trees that have fallen or are hanging in the woods near your home or drive, and can leave the wood for firewood or haul it away.
