A Valley Floor Ringed by Bluffs

Tree Service in Jasper is shaped by one of the most distinctive valleys in Tennessee. Jasper, the seat of Marion County, sits in the southwestern Sequatchie Valley on fairly level ground at about 620 feet. Steep escarpments of the Cumberland Plateau rise to the north and west, low hills lie to the east, and the Sequatchie River runs just east of town before emptying into the Tennessee River at Jasper's southeastern boundary. Guntersville Lake, part of the Tennessee River system, forms the southern edge.

A long, narrow valley

The Sequatchie Valley runs about 65 miles along the Sequatchie River and is only about 3 to 5 miles wide, walled in by Walden Ridge on the east and the plateau on the west. The valley floor is where most homes and farms are, and it is where trees grow largest, in deeper soil than on the ridges above. Wind funnels along the valley in storms, and trees on open lots at the valley floor catch it.

Typical tree work around Jasper

  • Shade trees on town lots. Large oaks, maples and other hardwoods on older lots near the courthouse often need deadwood removal and clearance pruning over roofs.
  • Riverside and creek trees. Trees near the Sequatchie and Tennessee rivers deal with wet soils, flooding and bank erosion, and they often lean toward the water.
  • Farm and fence-line trees. Trees along pastures and fences can drop limbs on fences or grow into lines.
  • Dead pines. Pines stressed by drought or beetles can die quickly and become brittle; they are best removed before they fall.
  • Stump grinding and cleanup. After removals, we grind stumps so lawns and fields can be mowed.

Storms in Marion County

Marion County is not immune to severe weather. On April 27, 2011, a tornado that started in Jackson County, Alabama as an EF4 crossed into Marion County near Nickajack Dam and crossed Nickajack Lake at EF2 strength before dissipating northeast of Haletown. Trees along the river and lake corridors are often the ones that take the brunt of such storms.

A town with deep roots

Jasper was established in 1820 on land leased for $1 from Elizabeth 'Betsy' Pack, daughter of Cherokee chief John Lowery, and named after Revolutionary War figure William Jasper. It was incorporated in 1959 and had 3,612 residents at the 2020 Census. Many older homes in town have trees that have grown with them for generations.

How we work

We start with a visit: we look at the tree, the ground and access, and talk with you about what you want. We explain whether pruning, removal or leaving it alone makes most sense. You get a written estimate before any work is booked, with cleanup terms spelled out.

Jasper Questions

Do you come out as far as Jasper?

Yes. Jasper and the lower Sequatchie Valley are within our service area. Call or send the form and we will schedule a visit.

My tree near the river is leaning more each year. What should I do?

A tree leaning more over time, especially on a soft bank, may be losing root support. Have it checked before it falls into the water or onto a structure. We can tell you if it can be reduced or should be removed.

Can you clear trees along a pasture fence?

Yes. We remove trees and limbs along fence lines carefully to avoid fence damage and can grind stumps to stop regrowth.

Should I prune a tree that hangs over my roof?

Usually, yes. Branches over a roof drop leaves and debris, scrape shingles in wind and give squirrels a path to the attic. Pruning them back several feet from the roofline, using proper cuts, is a simple way to protect the house.
